The Box Office, Videos, Interviews

by Johannes

I usually don't care for box office numbers, but its still nice to see that the Nolan brothers can do once again quite well with a smaller film. You can check out some video interviews and some videos from The Prestige Premiere, with all the usual suspects at IGN. There are a lot of interviews around, DarkHorizons has one with Christian Bale, one with Hugh Jackman and one with Michael Caine. Here is another interview with Jonathan Nolan on writing The Prestige.

Prestige Interviews & Promo

by Johannes

With less than a week until The Prestige opens in the USA (while I'll have to wait for another whopping three months) naturally there is a lot of promotion going on. Hugh Jackman will be on the Tonight Show on Monday Oct. 16, on Regis & Kelly on Oct. 19 and with Ellen DeGeneres on Friday Oct. Michael Caine was on the Tonight Show already on Thursday Oct. 12, but he will be on Regis & Kelly on Friday Oct. 20. Looks like Jackman and Caine are the ones doing TV promotion mainly.

Check at AOL where Bale & Jackman are doing an episode of Unscripted, interviewing each other using your questions. There is also a new B motif of the poster.

Creative Screenwriting did an interview with the Nolan brothers which you can find here. Also be sure to check out a new interview Chris Nolan did for In Focus.

Here you go.

The official release is not far away and so is the Worldpremiere which will take place on Tuesday, October 17th at the El Capitan Theater, Los Angeles. (Thanks to Pat for that info!)

Official Prestige Website & First Looks

by Johannes

Don't know how I missed that - well actually, I do. Browsing the Official Prestige Website with an alternative browser one gets redirected to a Disney dummy page. So you might have to resort to the Internet Explorer. Once you do that, you can enjoy a couple of short clips from the film that are hidden across the page. As soon as you have collected all journal pieces you can watch an exclusice one minute clip. These clips are really worth, so check it out! (Thanks to Pat, for bringing that to my attention!)

The first reviews for The Prestige begin to pop up. Here is someone on a messageboard, who has seen it, answering questions (Thanks to Ahmed!) and there is a positive review up at PopSyndicate: "The Prestige is grandly entertaining, and yet personal and heartbreaking. It is the essence of great Hollywood filmmaking."

The Prestige News: poster, interview

by Johannes

Over at LatinoReview you can find a fabulous interview that was done with Chris Nolan while he was finishing the sound mix for The Prestige. The interview concerns his new film as well as his carier as a filmmaker so far. A definitve must read! After a brief introduction and a description of Nolan working in the sound studio the article contains a description of the first ten minutes of the film, so if you don't want to know just skip to the interview. (Thanks also to Pat P!)

The official one sheet poster has also been released and looks like this.

David Bowie in talks for The Prestige

According to various websites David Bowie could return to the big screen in The Prestige for the role of serbian inventor Nicola Tesla, whose help Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman) seeks. One of Bowie's most prominent role was in The Man Who Fell to Earth, a film by Nicolas Roeg, who Nolan is a fan of.

Nolan Interview

Nolan mentioned The Prestige in an interview with About.com:

Is The Prestige based on a true story?
No, it’s based on a novel by Christopher Priest. It’s a pretty fascinating world and something that’s never really been seen before in films actually which makes it kind of exciting. It’s a bit smaller than Batman was but I think equally compelling.

Does The Prestige have a hook like Memento?
There are plenty of hooks, yes. I haven’t spent a lot of time talking about it yet because I haven’t made it yet, so we’re still finding it. For me, the main hook is really the extraordinary world of magic at a time when magicians were really the premiere entertainers. A lot of the things really in a funny sort of way were the precursor to cinema and a lot of the things they were doing are now things that happen in movies from special effects and so forth onward. So we get to create a world in which the narrative plays tricks on the audience just the way the magicians are.

The Prestige casting news

It seems like The Prestige is finally moving into production. Daily Variety reports that both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman started negotiation to star in the film. The two will star as the two rivaling magicians, Bale as Alfred Borden and Jackman as Rupert Angier. Jackman is currently filming for the third X-Men film and will move on to the Prestige afterwards. Michael Caine has also been rumored for a role.

Emma Thomas will once again produce together with Aaron Ryder of Ray Gun Prods. Pre-Production is scheduled to begin next week (October 10th) and start of the shoot is scheduled for the second week of January 2006.

September 24, 2004: News from Christopher Priest

I received an email from Christopher Priest, who wrote the original novel The Prestige. He says that Chris Nolan's movie adaptation of the book still seems to be fairly high in Nolan's priorities. The novel has been optioned to Newmarket for several years. Priest has seen an advance copy of Jonathan Nolan's screenplay, and says that "it is an extraordinary and brilliant script, a fascinating adaptation of my novel. Should the film be made, it seems likely it will be a return to the unusual and challenging material that made Memento so memorable."

The Prestige is a novel about two rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London:

In 1878, two young stage magicians clash in the dark during the course of a fraudulent séance. From this moment on, their lives become webs of deceit and revelation as they vie to outwit and expose one another.

Their rivalry will take them to the peaks of their careers, but with terrible consequences. In the course of pursuing each other's ruin, they will deploy all the deception their magicians' craft can command--the highest misdirection and the darkest science.

Blood will be spilled, but it will not be enough. In the end, their legacy will pass on for generations...to descendants who must, for their sanity's sake, untangle the puzzle left to them.

17/04/2003: The new Nolan Brothers movie is: The Prestige

Christopher Nolan will most probably direct "The Prestige" an adaptation of the Christopher Priest novel, to which his brother Jonathan Nolan wrote the script. The story begins in 1878, as a seance hatches a bitter rivalry between two young stage magicians.
The film has a projected budget of $40 million and will be produced by Nolan himself, his wife Emma Thomas and Aaron Ryder. Rumors say that the film will maybe star Jude Law.
It is unclear when "The Prestige" will go into production, but it could well be that this will be even before "Batman: The Frightening".
Source: Variety

It seems like the Nolan Brothers will work again (after Memento, which is based on a short story (actually the idea to it) by Jonathan) together on a film.

In an interview Chris said:

"Yes, we [he and his brother] are working together on something right now but the Howard Hughes biopic is going be the next thing I am going to start writing."

While this sounds very vague and it surely won't go into proper production during the next time, I really hope that this movie finds it's way. After all, the first "collaboration" brought us Memento.
