Memento Goofs?

People seem to have a lot of fun finding errors in films. That's okay, as long as they don't get overzealous.

This section is grouped in three categories: No Goofs, Goofs and Uncertain. With a film as complex as Memento it can sometimes become difficult to say if something was done on purpose or not.

I'd really hear your opinion, by e-mail or at the Discussion Board where everyone can take part in the discussion.

No Goofs

Leonard's Memory

A lot of people say: How could Lenny remember that, know this? The answers are:

a) In a calm, relaxed situation he is able to remember things he focuses on for a longer period maybe from 15 minutes up to half an hour.

b) Conditioning: Lenny is able to remember things through repetition. He learned how to use his camera, he learned about his own condition and the Sammy Jenkis story he is telling.

c) He is still able to remember the things he learned before the incident.

License Plate

The changing of Teddy's License Plate is intended, it is even in the screenplay. For more information on this see the Trivia Section.

Goofs

Continuity Errors

The sky on the photograph Leonard takes of the hotel sign does not equal the sky at the moment he taking the picture

The polaroid showing Jimmy Grantz shows an entirely different actor than Larry Holden (not nearly that well build...; Larry Holden once even complained about that.).

In the flashbacks of the "incident" the bathroom door once opens on the right side, than on the left.

Errors concerning Lenny's Condition

When Lenny notes Teddy's car license number at the end of the movie he also writes down "Fact 6" without being able to know about the other tattoos. (Thanks to Ed White)

Uncertain

These could be goofs, but maybe they are not; who knows?

Maybe I begin to overinterpret things, but with a film like Memento you never know.

The photograph that Natalie has in her apartment shows Larry once with and the next time without his moustache. (Thanks to Chris DiRico for the hint).

What makes believe that this may be intentional is:

a) The photo showing Larry without his moustache is well lit, so that we can see exactly that he has no moustache.

b) Concerning the rest of the photos, they look very similar. So they are not meant to represent two different ones.

c) As James Mottram writes in the Shooting Schedule that is contained in his book The Making Of Memento, the shots were filmed on the same day ("Day 5: [...] the sequence where Leonard studies the photo of Natalie and Jimmy; and Leonard writing on the polaroid of Natalie [She has also lost someone...].")

Mountcrest or MonteRest Inn

When Natalie writes down how Leonard can find Dodd, she notes that he stays at the MonteRest Inn. But when Leonard reads the note and drives up to the Inn he pronounces it differently, more like Mountcrest Inn. When we see the Inn's sign we notice that it reads Mountcrest Inn.

Another oddity that shows us how unreliable our memory is...

Natalie's handwriting on the coaster Lenny finds in his pocket changes. On the left: just before Leonard enters Ferdy's Bar; on the right: at the Tattoo Parlor. (Thanks to Andrew Phillips for the hint.)

Now, with every other film I would say that this is definitely a mistake, but with Memento?

And there is even more to it: As Pablo Tellerķa points out, if you follow the "local" link on the official Memento website you'll get 3 images in a row, words written by Natalie throughout the movie. But all of the three writings are definitely different.
